DECLINED….But come thru percentage!

For as long as I have been able to work, I have always handled a cash register or made a transaction with a credit or debit card. It’s very simple and easy to do. Sometimes depending on the type of software, all you have to do for a credit or debit card is just swipe. That’s all and the computer does the rest for you and prints the receipt for you to give to the customer.
I currently work at McAllister’s Deli which is known for it’s delicious sandwiches, spuds, salads, and sweet tea. It’s a very enjoyable job depending on the type of worker you are. I mean of course if the motto is “Have fun with no regrets” I would say that. It’s very true. They want you to have fun in this work environment.

So what’s the point of this post? Because it has to be something for me to make a post about it….
Well, let me start with this story….

I was at work today doing what I always do as an employee at McAllister’s Deli, having fun with no regrets. I was doing a little singing and a little dancing here and there, having a grand time in the Lord. I was the cashier that had to stay til the end of morning shift which means I was by myself toward the end. There was a girl that came in to order some food around this time. I took her order and everything was good. We even engaged in a nice conversation (I haven’t had a chance to really just have a good wholesome conversation with any of the customers before then). When I told her the total of her food, she handed me her card and I swiped it.
What happened next was so awkward and uncomfortable that I couldn’t even speak…

The computer showed that her card…… DECLINED.
It was at this moment where I didn’t know what to say. I was speechless. How do you tell a sweet girl who actually wants to hold conversation and giving you a reason to love your job that her card is declined? How do I say it? I can’t just up and say “Ma’am your card is declined”. If it was me in her shoes and someone said that I would be so embarrassed! I couldn’t do that! I had to come up with something to avoid this!
So what did I do?

I said, “It’s saying that you don’t have enough on your card. Do you by chance have cash on you.” At least this was somewhat of a nice way to put it. She didn’t have cash and she ended up telling me that she just might not have enough on her card, that’s why it probably didn’t go through. I couldn’t let her go down like that. She could be my future best friend in the making! Instead of just telling her sorry and letting her go without food, you know what I did?

I asked her was she a student.

Why would being a student matter? Well, it matters because at McAllister’s Deli in Starkville, MS if you are a college student at Mississippi State University you can get a 10% discount. Restaurants cater to the students since campus is like the center of attention in Starkville. This might not be that big of a discount but in some cases, like this one, it can be a blessing.

When I asked her, she said she was a student but looked puzzled. I simply gave her a discount and told her the new price. I, Tessa Terry, was this young lady’s ram in the bush. It took down her price to where she had enough to pay for her meal with her card!

She thanked me sooooooooooooooooooooooooo much ( I expressed the “so” like she did lol). I felt very warm inside for helping her out.

What is the moral of this story you might ask?

You might be hungry and plan to stop somewhere and then the enemy decides to sit his sly tail on your bank account. You don’t know what to do and just standing at the counter dry lipped and ashy faced and the enemy is sitting there giggling because he thinks he is all that and a bag of Doritos. What he doesn’t know is my God provide blessings in disguise. You just have to look for it! It may come in  10% or it may come in 30% but you should thank God for coming through with that blessing! Come on in where the table is spread and the feast of the Lord is going on! And when He comes through with that discount that gets your belly plump and sticking out to where you can’t see the next step you take, you better take the time out to praise Him!

Praise God for the percentage!

You all have a blessed night!

Tessa Spice
